What Has AmBADASSador EMMA Been Up To?
Wow! What a whirlwind first two weeks of the 2017!
Since today was the first day I have to sit down for more than 5 minutes, I thought I would catch you all up on my travels. In the first 12 days of the New Year, I have been in 8 states, one of which I had never been to before.
*Record scratch* back, we’ll do this in order.
I started a new job at Big Boulder Ski Area when I came home from Vermont – I couldn’t go an entire half of a season without snowboarding, and I figured getting a part time job as a lift attendant was a great way to get a season pass and a little bit of gas money. Plus, now the whole #Squad – Tayler, Brielle, and I – all work there, so there’s way more opportunity to shred. What could go wrong?
Until I had to be at work at 7 am on New Year’s Day… Anyway, no big deal, a day on the mountain is still a day on the mountain.
At 3 am the next morning, my wonderful boyfriend drove me to Newark to catch a flight to Phoenix, Arizona to meet some students and professors from the University of Denver law school to work with the Tribal Wills Project.
For this trip, the TWP was invited to the Gila River Indian Community to meet with clients and draft testamentary documents (wills, health care power of attorney documents, living wills, etc.), and have them completed and signed over the course of the week. I don’t think I can put into words how valuable this experience was for me. It was my first real practical experience in legal work, and I learned so much within 5 days. Phoenix is such a beautiful city, and the weather was phenomenal. I had no problem getting myself out of bed every morning to catch the sunrise on a four-mile run through the desert. I had the opportunity to meet with a few clients from the reservation, and listening to their stories and providing them with the services they need was both eye-opening and truly humbling. Working with the dedicated individuals from the University of Denver was inspiring, and I hope to be involved in the project going forward.
I came home to work two more evenings on the mountain, and then took off for one of my favorite places, Killington, Vermont. In the two years I spent in Vermont for law school, Killington became a second home, and is such an incredible place to shred. I made friends with two locals, twins, that spend nearly every day on the snow. I have learned so much from them, and it's thanks to them that my riding has improved. In the three days I got to ski, I started off with a few hours of solo cruising in the sunshine, and then the next day we went first chair to last chair, ripping through park laps, and hiked up to a gorgeous peak to get the last little bit of powder hanging on from the most recent storm.
Wednesday was warm and sunny, and the mashed-potato-snow made for a great park-learning day. We got some great shots and landed a bunch of tricks we had been working on, and I broke yet another binding. The night before, we had all gone to a gymnastics training center to get more comfortable being in the air, and I think that even though we were exhausted, it helped so much. Vermont – you were amazing, as always.
Under the light of the full moon, I drove down to Boston to see a friend from high school, did some reminiscing (it’s already my five-year reunion year- what?!?!), checked out the oldest pizza place in the Italian district, and found some Yuengling Lager at a local dive bar. I finally landed back home in PA yesterday to spend some time with my favorite Gracies – my puppy and my sister.
This morning I finished up my orientation for my full-time experiential learning semester. I will be completing my formal legal education at the law firm of Barley Snyder.
Now, since the sun is shining, and I don’t know how to sit still long enough for this cold I’ve been fighting to catch up with me, I’m off for a hike!
